Sports Movies/Contest

There is nothing better than curling up with a bowl of soup and watching a movie.

Actually, there are better things.

But there is definitely nothing better than a true underdog story. You know, one in which the underdog beats the top dog?

Actually, there are probably better things than that too.

In any case, here are my Top 10 Sports Movies ever. This list is definitive. You’re entitled to your own opinions but I can’t guarantee those will be correct.

Here’s the list:

10: Juwanna Mann (Don’t scoff, it’s actually hilarious.)

Sport: Basketball. But the movie really just takes us on a journey to discover ourselves.

9: We Are Marshall

Sport: Football/not-laughing-at-Matthew-McConaughey’s-accent-contest.

8: Foxcatcher

Sport: Wrestling. Far too intese to joke about.

7: Rocky IV

Sport: Boxing/The Cold War.

6: Glory Road

Sport: Basketball/Trying to spot Julian from One Tree Hill.

5: Warrior

Sport: UFC/Tom Hardy-watching. Yes. I talked about Tom Hardy again, so what. No one cares enough to call me out on it.

4: The Fighter

Sport: Boxing/Overcoming inner demons.

3: Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

Sport: ^^

2: Coach Carter

Sport: Basketball/anticipating Samuel L. Jackson’s next move.

1: Friday Night Lights

Sport: Football. Life. Heartbreak. Heartwarmth. Love. Passion. Desire. Take your pick. It’s perfect.

    My favourite sports movie of all time is Remember the Titans! My reasons are threefold;
    1. When Coach Yeast (It’s Yoast, but I call him Yeast) gave his speech in the huddle near the end of the movie, even my goosebumps had goosebumps.
    2. Dr Turk, (Petey, for those of you who don’t watch Scrubs) gave an incredible performance as the cocky running back. Except on the field when it mattered. What a guy.
    3. Ryan Gosling was an absolute liability at cornerback, and having him be a loser for a wrinkle in time on screen is something that no one should overlook.

My 2 favourite sport movies and there quotes:
    Dodgeball:
Peter LaFleur: “Patches is this really necessary?
Patches: “Necessary? Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine?”
    Peter: “Probably not”
Patches: “No, but I do it anyways because it’s sterile and I like the taste”

    Coach Carter:
(1)Coach Carter: “I came to teach basketball players and you became students. I came to teach boys and you became men.”
(2)Reporter: “Ty Crane, how does it feel like to be the next LeBron James?”
Ty Crane: “LeBron James? I’m the only Ty Crane” *mic drop*

The Ringer walks deliberately, delicately and charmingly through the minefield laid it in the premise of cheating to win the Special Olympics.
1 Michael- “Incredible; that guy is the Deion Sanders of retards.”
2 Glen- “Next time we should go Danish -split it 60-60.”
I also award this movie 4500 bonus points for being so much better the I had anticipated.

  4. My favourite sports movie is Miracle. Yes it’s about the US hockey team, but it’s a true underdog story if there ever was one.

    Favourite quote:

“Great moments… are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here, tonight, boys. That’s what you’ve earned here tonight. One game. If we played ’em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It’s over. I’m sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw ’em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it.”

  5. Any Given Sunday,

I don’t know what to say really.
    Three minutes
to the biggest battle of our professional lives
    all comes down to today.
    Either
    we heal
    as a team
or we are going to crumble.
    Inch by inch
    play by play
    till we’re finished.
We are in hell right now, gentlemen
    believe me
    and
    we can stay here
and get the shit kicked out of us
    or
    we can fight our way
    back into the light.
We can climb out of hell.
    One inch, at a time.

Now I can’t do it for you.
    I’m too old.
I look around and I see these young faces
    and I think
    I mean
I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make.
    I uh….
I pissed away all my money
    believe it or not.
    I chased off
anyone who has ever loved me.
    And lately,
I can’t even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life
    things get taken from you.
    That’s, that’s part of life.
    But,
you only learn that when you start losing stuff.
You find out that life is just a game of inches.
    So is football.
    Because in either game
    life or football
the margin for error is so small.
    I mean
one half step too late or to early
    you don’t quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast
and you don’t quite catch it.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game
    every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us
    to pieces for that inch.
We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch.
    Cause we know
when we add up all those inches
that’s going to make the fucking difference
    between WINNING and LOSING
    between LIVING and DYING.

    I’ll tell you this
    in any fight
it is the guy who is willing to die
who is going to win that inch.
    And I know
if I am going to have any life anymore
it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch
because that is what LIVING is.
The six inches in front of your face.

Now I can’t make you do it.
You gotta look at the guy next to you.
    Look into his eyes.
Now I think you are going to see a guy who will go that inch with you.
You are going to see a guy
who will sacrifice himself for this team
because he knows when it comes down to it,
you are gonna do the same thing for him.

    That’s a team, gentlemen
and either we heal now, as a team,
or we will die as individuals.
    That’s football guys.
    That’s all it is.
    Now, whattaya gonna do?

One of my favourite movies is Happy Gilmore.

Happy Gilmore: During high school, I played junior hockey and still hold two league records: most time spent in the penalty box; and I was the only guy to ever take off his skate and try to stab somebody.

Angels in the outfield is the most heartwarming sports film of all time. If you believe in miracles, this is a must watch. Contains all aspects of a perfect 90’s sports film.

George Knox (Coach) when the Angles sucks:
We don’t think as a team. We don’t play as a team. WE CANT EVEN LOSE AS A TEAM.
